During a summer program Izcalli incorporated the use of gender separate circles (circulos) in order for the youth to have a safe and comfortable space to discuss their own issues and emotions. This evolved and Cihua Ollin – Circulo de Mujeres, “meaning movement of women” in Nahuatl, was also formed with Izcalli’s women organizers, supporters, and friends. This Circulo de Mujeres met monthly and utilized talking circles to address issues that pertain to us as women, students, professionals, mothers, wives, daughters etc. The goal was to create a space for support and well-being. Additionally, an annual Women’s Gathering was hosted from 2002 through 2005 along with several Circulo de Mujeres programs were facilitated at different high schools and a community center in San Diego the following years.
