Teaching Chican@ Theater to the next generation
Teatro Otra Vez
In 2012, four Teatro Izcalli actors (Alicia, Jose, Macedonio, and Veronica) are teaching Chican@ theater to high school students in the San Diego Unified
School District. The students were recently interviewed and asked about their participation in the groups. One female student was asked why she was not involved in the high school drama club (none of the students are) and she replied,
They’re doing the Wizard of Oz right now. Do I look like Dorothy?
Teatro Izcalli fully embraces the stance that culturally relevant instructional strategies, is what is needed to fully engage our students in school.
Both high school groups will be performing some of Teatro Izcalli’s actos for
their peers in all school assemblies this month. Teatro Izcalli is very proud of their students at Clairemont High School and Patrick Henry High School for their commitment and dedication to their group. This is the second year students at Patrick Henry are performing Chican@ theater. Last year, they named their group Teatro Otra Vez (Theatre Once Again) and performed at the National Teachers Conference in San Diego. This year, they will also be performing at the ARE (Association of Raza Educators) Conference. It’s the year 2010 and the overwhelming majority of students have never seen Chican@ theater. Teatro Otra Vez, Teatro Izcalli, and the many other Chica@ teatro groups to come are committed to changing that!
